Since that time the church has expanded and built four main buildings on the site for worship, children’s ministry, adult classes and staff offices, and youth and fellowship space, to serve the needs of their congregation. However, the buildings were disjointed, aging, and disappearing into the background as people passed by in their cars on Main Street. The church desired to reach a new generation and needed help envisioning eye-catching changes that improved ministry functionality, added visible outdoor community spaces, to invite passersby onto the campus, and bring new excitement through updated interior and exterior finishes, materials, and colors.
Central chose to partner with Visioneering Studios as their turnkey design-builder to accomplish all these goals within their small project budget. The team of Visioneering Studios Architecture (design) and Visioneering Studios Construction (build) worked seamlessly to achieve the desired results by sketching and pricing various options and phasing scenarios during the schematic design phase to make sure the church could get the maximum impact for their available dollars.
The final project included rehabbing a 4,000-square foot children’s ministry building with all new finishes, environmental graphics, and minor reconfiguration of spaces to achieve a new large group room. The existing sanctuary was also renovated with all new finishes, furniture, and an enlarged seating area for 220 people with a new stage. New construction included a 2,700-square foot lobby addition joining these two existing buildings together and providing a single, conditioned connection for families between the children’s and worship spaces. This addition also included new code-compliant and convenient restrooms.
The administration building also received a new covered drop-off and portico that connected it to the worship center. The portico was constructed of modern materials and finishes and is flanked by a hardscaped entry plaza with umbrella tables and chairs sending a visible invitation to people passing by on Main Street.
Other site improvements included a renovated courtyard, a stage area, and decorative wood trellises. The fellowship hall, which serves as a second venue with 250 seats and also handles the needs of the student ministry also received a makeover with new colors and finishes.
Central Christian Church is known as a church with a culture of hospitality and service to its community. The desire of the church through this project was to continue their ministry and outreach while at the same time creating a physical environment where both the church members and people from the community felt welcome and invited. The end result was a vibrant, new image presented to the street that was congruent with the vibrant life and ministry that was already happening inside the church.
At Visioneering Studios, we are storytellers, and this is success to us…when a building can help tell the story of the church even when no one is around to speak it.
